Method 1 using SUBtools (suitable for .sub, .idx, .pgs and .sup files)
SUBtools over Subler:
- Open SUBtools and go into Preferences, then select the OCR tab
- Make sure the language you need to OCR is available in the dropdown menu. If not, go to https://tesseract-ocr.github.io/tessdoc/Data-Files.html#data-files-for-version-302 and download the corresponding language file (example: tesseract-ocr-3.02.deu.tar.gz)
- Unzip the file's content
- In SUBtools, click the "+" button and select the decompressed folder (not the files)
- Select the language now available in the dropdown menu and exit Preferences
- Open the .idx/.sub file and OCR will start. Wait until it's over (several minutes).
- Scroll through the entire subtitle content and correct them every time you see a "Spelling" flag in the "Warning" column
- Export to .srt
- Done
- Download the latest Subler
- Open and go to Preferences > OCR > Download relevant languages
- Go to Preferences > Advanced, and make sure VobSub to Tx3g is enabled
- Select Open and open your MKS or MKV file
- Deselect all tracks except the subtitle track
- Choose File > Save, leave extension as .m4v and confirm
- It will now OCR the subtitles and save a .m4v file
- When it's done, highlight the subtitle track and choose File > EXPORT. This will save as .srt
- Done
- Open MKVToolNix
- Drag and drop (or right-click > Add files) to open the .idx file. It will automatically fetch the data from the .sub file too)
- Righ-click > Add files again if you want to add more languages (don't use drag and drop)
- Scroll the window down and press "Start multiplexing" to export as .mks file
- Follow Method 2 to OCR each track from the .mks in Subler
SUBtools over Subler:
- Easily find spelling/spacing mistakes (typically just a few) and correct them before export. OCR mistakes identical between the two softwares.
- Subler replaces half of the apostrophes >> ' << with another character >> ‘ << although it's a minor issue.
- Typically takes seconds to OCR, whereas SUBTools can take a dozen minutes.
- If you need it, Subler has its own wiki guide here https://bitbucket.org/galad87/subler/wiki/Subtitles Guide
